Bible Verses About Fear
Fear is a universal human experience, but Scripture repeatedly calls us to courage rooted in God's character. These verses remind us that we need not fear when the Almighty is with us.
"Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."
God addresses fear directly with three promises: His presence, His strength, and His support.
"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me."
David's famous psalm declares confidence even in death's shadow because of God's presence.
"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control."
Paul reminds Timothy that fear is not from God — instead, He gives power, love, and a sound mind.
"When I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not fear. What can mere mortals do to me?"
David acknowledges fear while choosing trust — fear becomes the trigger for faith.
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
God commands Joshua to courage as he faces the daunting task of leading Israel into the Promised Land.
"For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, "Abba, Father!""
Paul contrasts the fear of slaves with the confidence of children who know their Father.
"There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. The one who fears has not been perfected in love."
John reveals that God's perfect love is the antidote to fear.
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you."
Moses encourages Israel with the promise of God's unfailing presence.
