Bible Verses About Depression
Depression is a heavy burden that many carry. These verses remind us that God sees our pain, stays close in our darkness, and offers genuine hope.
"Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unrest within me? Put your hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him, my Savior and my God."
The psalmist speaks to his own depressed soul, redirecting it toward hope.
"The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears and delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."
David assures us that God draws especially close when we're crushed.
"Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."
God promises His presence, strength, and support to those who struggle.
"I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry. He lifted me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock and made my footsteps firm."
David testifies to God's rescue from the pit of despair.
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Paul assures us that nothing — including depression — can separate us from God's love.
"Answer me quickly, O LORD; my spirit fails. Do not hide Your face from me, or I will be like those who go down to the Pit. Let the morning bring me word of Your loving devotion, for I have put my trust in You."
David honestly expresses his desperation while still trusting God.
"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Jesus invites the exhausted and heavy-laden to find rest in Him.
"Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD's loving devotion we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness."
Jeremiah finds hope in God's daily mercies even amid sorrow.
