Bible Verses About Temptation
Temptation is a universal human experience, but God provides the way of escape. These verses equip us to recognize and resist temptation through His power.
"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."
Paul assures believers that God limits temptation and provides escape.
"Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
James gives a simple formula: submit to God, resist the devil.
"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."
The author reminds us that Jesus understands temptation and offers help.
"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
Jesus instructs His disciples to combat temptation through vigilance and prayer.
"But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is lured away and enticed. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death."
James traces the progression from desire to temptation to sin.
"So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."
Paul prescribes walking by the Spirit as the solution to fleshly desires.
"I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You."
The psalmist describes Scripture memorization as protection against sin.
"Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart."
Paul advises Timothy to flee temptation and pursue virtue in community.
