Bible Verses About Forgiveness

Forgiveness lies at the heart of the gospel — God forgives us, and calls us to forgive others. These verses explore both the gift we receive and the gift we're called to give.

1 John 1:9

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

John assures believers that confession leads to complete forgiveness and cleansing.

Ephesians 4:32

"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."

Paul grounds our forgiveness of others in God's forgiveness of us.

Colossians 3:13

"Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you."

Paul calls believers to extend the same forgiveness they have received.

Psalm 103:12

"As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us."

David uses distance to illustrate the completeness of God's forgiveness.
